Oh, deer

Alan and Dave (Samantha's dad) went hunting yesterday at Alan's Uncle Donnie's land. They left about 5:30 am and were gone all day. They decided they would climb out of their trees at 4:45 and go home... They both sat in their trees all day without seeing anything. Alan said it was pretty miserable because it was VERY windy and his tree swayed all day. Also, all he had for sustenance was 90 calorie Special K bars. :(

Alan looked at his watch at 4:30 and was going to climb down in 15 minutes when he suddenly saw a group of deer. After the deer did some kind of territorial dance at him and some of them ran, he managed to get a shot at the leader of the pack. He had to follow her, as she ran away and collapsed in a creek. He said it was a shot right through her lungs, which was slightly off where it needed to be, but pretty good since his gun wasn't "sighted in." Anyway, he's so excited because this was his first deer kill ever. He hunted when he was a teenager but I gather he wasn't totally committed, and basically just climbed into a tree and went to sleep. This is the first year since I've known him that he has hunted, and he has only been 3 times this year.

Apparently it was a big struggle to pull the deer out of the creek and up a mountain (including their tree stands and all their gear). They took turns with the deer, using a strap around their waist that was also attached to her. It took them almost two hours to get her up the mountain and back to the truck! I suppose that's why people have four wheelers for hunting... Alan said he didn't feel so bad because Dave is a former Army Ranger and he was hurting (and sore this morning) just like him. Ha! It was a big, old deer - over 100 pounds - and she is at the processor's now, so we will have venison next weekend. Of course, we plan on inviting Samantha's family over to eat since Dave did half the work! Lisa said they don't want us to give them any of the venison, because then she would have to cook it and she doesn't like that... And if you are against deer hunting, I will let you speak with Lisa - she's a veterinarian and thinks it's good for the deer population. :)

Yeah for Alan! Josh took one of the guys (Michael) from church on Saturday and he had never killed a buck and he got a 7-point. Josh was so excited for Michael- even more than he would have been for himself because he has several buck kills. He has killed 2 big does this year and thankfully shared the meat. We bought a meat grinder and he has processed his own with the help of the grinder. I used to would not eat venison for any reason- now I really like it, as does most of the family. I made a huge pan of lasagna for church some time ago and did not tell anyone that it was ground venison- they ate every bite!

I'm not opposed to deer hunting in the least, but growing up in Michigan where EVERYONE hunts means I had far too much venison as a kid. NOT my favorite meat in the world!! But good for Alan!
