Alan competed in a 6-hour adventure race in October, and had done some training leading up to it. He actually ended up competing with strep throat and a high fever (when he got home, it was 104.7!). What a trooper!!! He really wasn’t in prime shape at that point though, as I don’t think he knew what to expect. Since then, he has really ramped up his training and has competed in two 5K races! Below are some pictures of his first 5K, and it was a COLD, snowy day! He said he had to keep his head down the entire time because of the snow/ice getting in his eyes.
The boys helped make a sign for him…
Breakfast of champions!
After the race.
Carter was pouting. He was so upset that we missed getting to the race on time (it was so cold/snowy that we knew we couldn’t be there for the entire time so we were trying to just make it to the finish line).
Alan won first place in his age group (he was the only competitor). He won a Wal-Mart gift card, which I spent on groceries – ha!
He did so well though, and averaged about 10 minutes per mile. Since then, he has improved his time and in his second 5K, he placed fourth in a larger group of people. And did I mention that he had the flu during that one?!? He is so tough!
I need to take a new picture of him, because he has lost 45-50 pounds in the past few months. In less than a week, he will compete in a 12-hour adventure race in Tennessee. He hasn’t been able to train much lately because the flu has been really rough on him – he has been to the doctor 3 times in about 4 weeks! His doctor hasn’t cleared him to run yet, so he’s a little antsy about getting back out there. Please pray that he survives his 12 hour race this Saturday! We are SO proud of him!
